Our Henderson phone line took 703 calls in the two years before September 20, 2026. Plenty of drivers in the valley face the same moment, with the key on the seat and every door shut. AAA says lockouts made up 10% of its roadside calls in 2024, so you are far from alone.
Try every door and the trunk first, then the car maker's app, then the roadside plan you may already pay for. If none of those works, call a licensed automotive locksmith and get the full price on the phone. If a child or a pet is inside on a hot day, call 911 before anything else.
- Walk around the car and try every door, window, and the trunk
- Have a friend or a rideshare driver bring the spare from home
- Open the doors from the car maker's app, even if you set it up on the spot
- Use the lockout service in your AAA plan or car insurance
- Call a licensed automotive locksmith and ask for the total price first
- Call 911 first if a child or a pet is locked inside
Why a Smart Car Locks With the Key Inside
Most keyless cars try to stop this from happening. AAA's lockout guide says these cars usually refuse to lock with a key sitting inside. A dead key fob, a dead car battery, or a locking glitch can beat that safety check.
Older cars have no such check at all. Press the lock button on the door, shut it, and the car does what you told it to do. That is why AAA tells drivers to stop using the inside lock button. Lock the car with the key once you are out, and you always have the key in your hand.

Keys locked in the trunk are a different problem. The AA warns against homemade tools on the trunk as well as the doors.
Your First Ten Minutes, Before You Pay Anyone
Slow down and check the easy things. AAA says drivers often find another door unlocked or a window left down. Walk all the way around the car and pull every handle, including the hatch or the trunk.
Next, think about the spare. Is one at home, at work, or with a family member? AAA points out that a friend can send a spare key to you with a rideshare driver. Nothing gets pried open that way.
No spare at all? Keep going down the list. The next three options can each get you in without any damage to the car.
Open It From Your Phone With the Maker's App
Many newer cars can unlock their doors from a phone. AAA says the maker's app may work even if you set it up right there in the parking lot. Some of these services charge a fee, so check before you count on one.
Two examples from the makers' own pages show how it works.
- Toyota. The Remote Connect plan lets you lock and open the doors from a phone or watch. Toyota lists it at $8 per month on select 2022 and later models.
- Hyundai. Bluelink can lock and open your car with a simple command and your PIN. Hyundai says Bluelink+ covers new Bluelink cars from the 2024 model year, and older models pay a low monthly fee.
Other brands have their own apps with their own rules. Your phone may be locked in the car too. If so, borrow a phone and sign in to the app with your account. Set the app up today, while you can still sit in the driver's seat and test it.
Use Roadside Coverage You Already Pay For
Before you pay anyone, check what you already have. AAA says most roadside plans cover lockouts, and its own plan does. Its drivers can often open the car without a locksmith. AAA also notes that some SUVs and luxury cars are beyond what roadside drivers can open. Those may need a locksmith or a tow to the dealer.
In Nevada, AAA plans also pay back part of a locksmith bill. Its Nevada membership page, dated May 16, 2022, lists these tiers. Ask AAA for today's prices before you join.
Car insurance can cover it too. Progressive's roadside page lists vehicle lockout as a covered service. It says it sends a provider, and you pay only for any replacement key. It also warns that a policy may limit how many roadside events it covers. Look up your own policy in your insurer's app before you call anyone else.
What Each Way Costs You
Prices swing with your car, the hour, and where you are parked. This table uses only figures from the pages linked above.
| Way back in | What it costs | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Spare by rideshare | The ride fare | Someone has to have the spare and be home |
| Toyota Remote Connect | $8 per month | Select 2022 and later models only |
| Hyundai Bluelink | Low monthly fee on older models, Bluelink+ on new 2024 and later | Needs your account and PIN |
| AAA Nevada plan | $64.99 to $124.99 a year (2022) | Locksmith payback capped at $50 to $150 |
| Insurance roadside | The service is covered, you pay for any replacement key | Your policy may cap the number of calls |
| Automotive locksmith | Set by the car, the hour, and the place | Get the total on the phone first |
| Breaking a window | New glass plus cleanup | Only when a life is at risk |
Call a Licensed Automotive Locksmith
When the app and the roadside plan both fail, a locksmith is the fastest clean fix. In Nevada, a locksmith needs a permit from the county sheriff under NRS 655.070. The permit lasts five years, and the holder has to carry it. Ask to see it when the tech arrives.
On the phone, give the year, make, and model, plus the exact spot where you are parked. Then ask for the total price, with any after hours charge in it. A fair shop will give you a number before anyone drives out.
One more reason to call a pro when you have no spare. AAA notes that a locksmith can also copy your key during the same visit. That turns one bad afternoon into the last one. Our guide on what to ask a locksmith before hiring has the full question list, and our car lockout service page explains how a visit works.
Why the Coat Hanger Costs More Than the Call
You may hear that a slim jim will set off the side airbag. That warning gets passed around a lot, and it is not proven. Wikipedia's slim jim entry says NHTSA research has not verified it, and car makers say it cannot happen.
The real damage is quieter, and it costs you later. The same entry says unskilled use of the tool will often knock the lock rods loose. Then the lock does not work, even with the key. Newer cars add barrier blocks and covers over the rods to stop this kind of tool.

AAA says shoelace, hanger, and slim jim tricks risk damage and often fail in untrained hands. Breaking a window is worse for your wallet. It can chip the paint, spread glass across the seats, and leave you without a window until the new glass is in.
When a Child or Pet Is Locked Inside
Call 911 first. Do not wait for a locksmith or a tow truck. Nevada law backs fast action here.
- A child. Under NRS 202.485, an officer or emergency worker may use any reasonable means to get a child out, free from civil liability. The same law says it does not apply to a parent who locks a child in by accident. Calling for help is the right move, not a confession.
- A pet. Under NRS 202.487, a bystander may remove a pet from a locked car in risky heat or cold. To be protected, you must report it to 911, police, animal control, or the fire department and ask for help. Then stay close by and work with whoever shows up.
If no help can reach you in time, AAA says to break the window farthest from the child or pet. Our post on whether police will unlock your car for free covers what Las Vegas and Henderson police do on a normal lockout call.
Make Sure This Only Happens Once
Newer cars already help. AAA found lockout calls fell from 13% for 2007 model year cars to under 10% for cars built in 2017 or later. A few habits close the rest of the gap.
- Hold the key in your hand before you shut the door
- Lock the car with the key or fob from outside, never with the door button
- Clip the keys to a bag or belt loop
- Leave a spare with someone you trust, close to where you live or work
- Set up the maker's app now, and test the unlock button
- Swap the fob battery as soon as the range starts to drop
Skip the magnet box under the bumper. AAA warns that thieves know where to look, and the boxes can shake loose or rust off. A real spare key is the better bet. Our key replacement service can cut and program one while you still have a working key.
